Abstract

The coral reef fish studies were conducted at Khang Khao Island, one of the Sichang Islands, Chonburi Province. Fish specimens were caught by different methods such as trapping, gill-netting, hook and line fishing and rotenone poisoning. Fish traps were placed at four sites and fish specimens were collected about once a week. The average weight of fish caught was 2524.81 gms. Per trap. Forty nine species of 18 familise were found. Five economic important species were recognized, these were Kood-Salad Plectropoma maculatum (BI.), Karang-ta-kiew Epinephelus malabaricus (BI. & Schn.), Soi-nok-khao Plectorhynchus pictus (Thunb.), Pee-suor-pak-yao Chelmon rostratus (Linn.) and Salid-hin Siganus oramin (BI. & Schn.). Most of collected fishes were recognized as reef residents, only a few was visitors.

Abstract

This research is a comparative case study on rice farming technology and dynamics of the recent rice farming transitions under the agro-ecological, technological and socio-economical conditions. The two ricefarming villages of this study were Ban Khoh in Ayutthaya province and Ban Khoh Rat in Nakhon Pathom province, representing the former and the more recent rice-producing reas, respectively. Qualitative research approach was employed, grounded on two conceptual frameworks: the Practical Technology Concept and the Agrarian Systems Concept. Highlights of the findings were as follows: 1) In Ban Khoh of Ayutthaya province, wet-season rice farming was still predominant, depending on single cropping of floating rice. Traces of indigenous rice farming technology could be minimally observed. Transitions to modern rice farming system had been gradual and limited, due to the constraints of the agro-ecology of the rice lands. Only a small number of full-time farmers existed. 2) On the contrary, Ban Khoh Rat of Nakhon Pathom province is an exemplary case of a rapid transition from traditional to a full-scale modern and commercial rice farming. Intensive all-year round rice farming system is predominant. Notably, full-time farmers comprised the majority of the village households. Factors contributing to this rapid transition phenomenon were: the government's continuous export-oriented rice policy, farmers' perceived benefits of intensive rice farming, advantage from the full-scale irrigation network, influx of the green revolution packages of technology, and the supporting culture and innovativeness of the farmers.

Abstract

The repellent potency of plant extracts to the Oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis, was determined on the basis of the rate of oviposition on cups containing 20% of citrus juice and coated outside with a mist spray of one gram equivalent of each plant extract per cup. One hundred and thirty extracts from 110 kinds of plants among which 97 were known species and 13 unknown were tested. Fifteen day old female flies which were known to lay high numbers of eggs were used in this experiment. Plant extracts which exhibited high repellency to the oviposition of the female flies were obtained from Azadirachta indica var. siamensis Veleton, Bixa orellana Linn., Citrus hystrix D.C., Cucumis melo Linn., Cymbopogon citrates Stapf., Hedychium coccineum var. angustifolium Roxb., Heliotropium indicum R. Br., Homalomena sp., Ocimum gratissimum Linn., Ricinus communis Linn., and Ternstroemia japonica Thunb. Among the unidentified species, they included En-Luang and Phra-Taba. Moderate levels of repellency were obtained from extracts of Allium sativum Linn., Melodorum fruticosum Lour, and Meha-Kamlang. Mild repellent to the oviposition of the flies was exhibited by plant part extracts of the following species: Acharas aspota Linn., Alpinia siamensis Schum., Andrographis paniculate Wall. Ex Nees, Anona squamosa Linn., Anthemis nobilis Linn, Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd., Cinnamomum siamense Craib., Cinnamomum zeylanicum Linn., Curcuma comosa Roxb., Curcuma longa Linn. ( = C. domestica Veleton), Curcuma zedoaria Roxae, Elholtzia blanda Benth., Eupatorium adenophorum Spreng., Jatropha curcas Linn., Jatropha gossypifolia Linn., Litsea cubeba Pers., Mentha cordifolia Opiz., Momordica charantia Linn., Myristica fragrans Linn., Piper sarmentosum R. ex H., Portulaca pilosa Linn., Quisqualis indica Linn., Stemona tuberose Lour., and Tinospora crispa Miers. Of the unidentified species, they included Gai-Khan, Kan-Tha-Mala, Lai-Ma, Ma-Haw, and Maurakot.

Abstract

The growth patterns and development of Stylosanthes hamata cv. Verano were studied in the Controlled environment at DSIR, Palmerston North from seedling emergence to full flowering at 131 days. The results showed that the growth and development of intact Varano were slow at the pre-flowering stage and increased rapidly after the onset of flowering. Maximum growth rate of 2.04 grams/plant/day was recorded between 70 and 80 days and maximum dry weight of 105 grams/plant based on the predicted growth model, was achieved approximately 108 days after seedling emergence. During this post-flowering stage, plant growth in terms of plant dry weight, branch development, leaf number and leaf area increased rapidly. Flowering commenced 35 days after seeding emergence and continued throughout the experimental period. Stem was the major plant component, followed by the inflorescence and leaf fractions.

Abstract

Fruit quality of ‘Khiew Waan’ tangerine from five growing locations in Rungsit, Pathoomtani province was studied in relation to their chemical and physical characteristics. The results showed that there were significant differences in chemical (TSS, TA, TSS/TA ratio and ascorbic acid) and physical (peel thickness and seed number) characteristics of tangerine fruits among five growing locations. Tangerine fruits from growing location with thin peel had higher TSS/TA ratio than those with thick peel. Differences in chemical and physical characteristics of tangerine fruits from various growing locations were discussed in relation to orchard conditions and cultural practices of orchard owners.
